The Gospel: Christian Privilege

Christian Privilege Is Receiving the Real Golden Ticket

When people talk about “privilege,” they usually mean advantages, status, or opportunities in this world. But there is a far greater privilege than any social, economic, or political advantage: the privilege of receiving the real golden ticket—salvation through Jesus Christ alone and the promise of eternal life.

The Gospel Christian Privilege

In the cartoon image, Steve realizes that what he’s holding is not a ticket to a factory or a fantasy, but to forgiveness, reconciliation with God, and everlasting joy in His presence. That picture is a powerful metaphor for what the Bible calls the gospel, the “good news” of Jesus Christ.

The Golden Ticket We All Need

The Bible says that every human being has the same basic problem: sin. Sin is not just “big” wrong things; it is any thought, word, or deed that falls short of God’s perfect holiness.

  • “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” (Romans 3:23, NASB 1995)

  • “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 6:23, NASB 1995)

Because of sin, we are separated from a holy God and cannot earn our way back to Him by good works, religion, or moral effort. Our “tickets”—our achievements, our goodness, our religious credentials—are like dull, powerless stubs that cannot open the gates of heaven.

We do not need a better version of ourselves; we need a Savior.

Christ Alone: The Real Golden Ticket

In the cartoon, Steve’s ticket is labeled “SALVATION THROUGH CHRIST ALONE.” That is exactly the claim of the New Testament. Jesus is not one way among many; He is the only way God has provided for sinful people to be saved.

  • Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.” (John 14:6, NASB 1995)

  • “And there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men by which we must be saved.” (Acts 4:12, NASB 1995)

The “golden ticket” of the gospel is not something we create. It is something God provides through His Son:

  1. Jesus lived the life we could not live
He perfectly obeyed the Father and fulfilled the Law without sin.

    • “He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.” (2 Corinthians 5:21, NASB 1995)

  2. Jesus died the death we deserved
On the cross, He bore the punishment our sins had earned, as our substitute.

    • “But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8, NASB 1995)

  3. Jesus rose from the dead
His resurrection proves that His sacrifice was accepted and that He has conquered sin and death.

    • “He was delivered over because of our transgressions, and was raised because of our justification.” (Romans 4:25, NASB 1995)

This is why Christ alone is the real golden ticket: He alone has satisfied God’s justice, paid our debt, and opened the stairway to heaven, so to speak.

What “Christian Privilege” Really Is

“Christian privilege” is not about being better than others, having worldly power, or being immune from suffering. It is about receiving, purely by grace, what no one could ever deserve:

  • Forgiveness of sins

    • “In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace.” (Ephesians 1:7, NASB 1995)

  • Adoption as children of God

    • “But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name.” (John 1:12, NASB 1995)

  • Peace with God

    • “Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.” (Romans 5:1, NASB 1995)

  • Certain hope of eternal life

    • “And this is the testimony, that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son.” (1 John 5:11, NASB 1995)

If you are in Christ, it is as though you are holding a ticket that you did not purchase, could never afford, and did not earn—but which guarantees you entrance into the eternal joy of God’s presence. That is not a human privilege to boast in; it is a divine gift to be humbled by and to rejoice in.

How to Receive the Real Golden Ticket

In the cartoon, Steve “realizes” he just received the real golden ticket. For you, the question is: How does a person actually receive this salvation? The Bible makes it clear:

  1. Recognize your need
Agree with God about your sin and your inability to save yourself.

    • “If we say that we have no sin, we are deceiving ourselves and the truth is not in us.” (1 John 1:8, NASB 1995)

  2. Repent and turn to Christ
Repentance is a change of mind and heart that turns from sin and self-reliance to God.

    • “Repent therefore and return, so that your sins may be wiped away.” (Acts 3:19a, NASB 1995)

  3. Believe in Jesus as Lord and Savior
Trust personally in His finished work—His death and resurrection—for your salvation.

    • “If you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.” (Romans 10:9, NASB 1995)

    • “For ‘Whoever will call on the name of the Lord will be saved.’” (Romans 10:13, NASB 1995)

This is not about adding Jesus to an already busy life as a small upgrade. It is about entrusting your whole self to Him—your guilt, your future, your hope—and receiving Him as your Lord, your treasure, and your only way to God.

An Invitation to You

Picture yourself in Steve’s place, standing at the bottom of that stairway to heaven, realizing that every earthly ticket you’ve held—success, religion, morality, pleasure—cannot take you where you most deeply need to go. Then you see it: the real golden ticket, marked not with your achievements, but with Christ’s finished work and the promise “SALVATION THROUGH CHRIST ALONE.”

If you have never turned to Christ, you can do so even now. There is no magic formula, but you might pray something like this from your heart:

“God, I confess that I am a sinner and that I cannot save myself. I believe that Jesus Christ died for my sins and rose from the dead. I turn from my sin and trust in Jesus alone as my Lord and Savior. Please forgive me, make me Your child, and lead me to live for You.”

The prayer does not save you; Jesus does. But when you sincerely repent and believe, God’s Word says you are saved, forgiven, and accepted in Christ.

  • “For ‘Whoever believes in Him will not be disappointed.’” (Romans 10:11, NASB 1995)

Then, like Steve in the cartoon, you can realize with joy: in Christ, you have received the real golden ticket.
